Post subject:  Bravil Recommendation (Glitch?) Varon Tries To Kill Me
I am a first time Elder Scrolls game player. Not sure what I did while talking to Varon Vamori but he tries to kill me before I can finish talking to him about the Staff. I started the quest when I was like a level 2 or 3 and didn't really know what I was doing. Varon will just appear in the Bravil Mages guild and attack anyone near. I cannot get close enough to him to raise his disposition. I do have the Beguile spell, but again I can't get near him without knocking him unconscious trying to defend myself, then as soon as I walk out the door I get arrested...I load a previous save point and try again or go play a different quest. It is quite frustrating. Also, I used the charm scroll but I must not have done it correctly now I don't have it. I had left this quest and stayed completely out of Bravil and focused on other quests. Now I am only Skill Level 5, a tad away from level 6, but I have put quite a few hours into the game and do not want to start over. However if I don't get the staff I won't get the recommendation and so I am screwed. I have read about the door glitch and the "Through a Nightmare, Darkly" glitch but no one says anything about this one. I went to Soris Arenim's house but since I haven't gotten to speak with Varon, the dialog about purchasing the staff from Soris is not there. What should i do?

Just some things off the top of my head:

Wait a day or two outside of Bravil and come back. Varon may have calmed down by then.

Make sure your personality isn't damaged. If it is, use a chapel altar to fix it.

Try hitting him with a calm spell as quickly as possible.

And remember to periodically save to a new file so you have something to fall back on without having to completely restart when things go poorly.

Thanks. I have played 80 or 90 hours of game play and come back periodically to see if he calmed down but he is raging. No matter where in Bravil he sees me he charges at me and gets me arrested. I seem to be good on all my levels. But will double check my Personality.

Also, I just realized the beguile spell works differently than a calm spell, going to buy a Calm spell now...Ugh frustrating lol

He gets knocked unconscious every time I come into contact with him. I need him to stay conscious and level down his rage so we can complete the dialog with him telling me he sold the staff, then I won't have to deal with him...the low level Calming spell I have does absolutely nothing so I am working on leveling up so I can buy a higher Calm/Sooth spell and hopefully that will work, or maybe a high Silence spell in addition. If anyone has any ideas please comment back.

Silence won't do anything. It's weird he doesn't calm down after being knocked out though.

IKR...he bounces back up and tries to kill me an anyone else nearby even guards. The guards fight back but I end up going to jail as soon as I leave the building. Only reason I was thinking to use a silence spell in addition to a calming spell is that he starts casting higher level spells as soon as he sees me which makes it harder.

....I even tried casting my lower level calm spells on him while he is unconscious lol...but nada

Could you try just going straight to the next stage of the quest? I don't know if it would work or not, but you may be able to get the staff without having to talk to him.
