No it hasn't. Except for maybe Skyrim, which almost went into full sellout mode. But even then, every titled ES game has had more in it than 99.9% of all other games. I'd say that's pretty much the exact opposite of a "cheap buck." That's a buck that was earned by giving and doing more than pretty much any other gaming company. TESO looks like a quick money grab, but the numbered series wasn't.

Here's a breakdown of sales (source: vgchartz.com):

Morrowind (XB/PC): 2.86 million (units)
Oblivion (XB/PS3/PC): 6.86 million
Skyrim (XB/PS3/PC): 14.33 million

Regardless of how exact these figures are, it's clear that Skyrim sets a precedent in sales that far surpasses previous games. Observing this trend, they may wish to release future games more frequently. It's not like they couldn't afford to hire a bigger team, if necessary. But ultimately I'd rather they not rush TESVI, or FO4 for that matter. If they need 5 years, I'll be glad to wait.

I for one hope that the Fallout franchise stays in Obsidian's hands: the ex-Black Isle guys know it better than anyone, and it frees up BGS to have a full 5 year development cycle for ES:VI instead of cramming it into 3 years like Skyrim.

Ultimately both franchises would be better off.

You also have to keep in mind that more people are into gaming in general today as opposed to 10 years ago.

Bethesda is a company working within a hugely profitable entertainment industry created by a shamelessly capitalist society. I'd say their goal is to make money.

Beth and Zeni probably do see their profits as first priority but we gotta admit they still haven't made a bad game either. Many thanks to the devs.

I believe the devs working for them are very passionate and knowledgable about the games they create. Their goal is to make enchating worlds for all of us. They do what they do cause they love it. As long as the devs have our support they'll never fail. Never ever.

Which is not the same as a cheap buck.

EA and their puppets are examples of companies only interested in making games for a "cheap buck," - but Bethesda still has integrity. If their goal for TES was to make a "cheap buck," then they'd release one every year and it wouldn't be the most expansive game that comes out, this side of a Creative Assembly effort. Bethesda and Zen still have their greed and bedfellows that are anti-consumer or even considered anti-fan, but if ES games are "cheap bucks," then what game in the history of games wasn't?

Setting out to make money doesn't mean every entrepreneur is only out there to make a quick and shameless cash grab. And in the realm of video games, Bethesda is on the complete other side of the spectrum. When/if the ES series ever turns into Dark Messiah games that come out every other quarter, then maybe they'll be out for the "cheap buck."

Guys, thread is on TES identity, not economics. Take it somewhere else. ;)
