So, is spanking beneficial to your child, or will it ruin them forever?
I'll post my opinion later when my brain works.

It shouldn't be abused as a discipline tool, but it can be effective.

While physical harm is something that no one enjoys...it is human nature to avoid situations that lead to physical harm.

I was deservedly spanked when I was a child, and I learned my lessons accordingly.

Yes. Spank your kids. I dunno if there is an official definition for spanking your children, but I view it as open palm, or something like a paddle, belt, etc and a few quick raps on the bottom. Enough to sting and be sore for a while, but not so bad they have bruises, can't sit, etc. If you do this as a form of punishment on occasion, you're fine.

no, because my parents never hit me, if i was too young to understand anyway they would let it pass, but when i got older they would sit me down and tell why that was bad and a basic set of rules to follow, also i had no reason to misbehave, but everybody is different

You shouldn't hit your kids because it is a horrible thing to do.

Why? That's just saying its bad because its bad. There's no explanation there. You mentioned it briefly in the other thread, but I'm interested to hear your thoughts on this more since your staunchly against this.

Regardless of my stance, I do realize this is a topic that doesn't really have a clear cut answer.....to each their own, to each their own moral as well..The different views on this topic play their part in making the world go round.

I'm generally against hitting your children, because, in the cases i've seen, kids just become resentful and even more bratty.
But some kids might need it, it varies with them.

In my case, I was never disciplined or hit. I always wanted explanations though, so if my mom or dad talked it over with me, I listened.

Though what really makes me sick are the parents who try to discipline their kids who are too young understand, why it's happening. Like disciplining your toddler because they broke a dish or something.

I couldn;t stand when my ex-step sister...who was in her early 30's...would make a scene at dinner time because her 7 yr old didn't eat her potatoes or something.
I can't stand that over-parenting........then to make it worse, I mentioned to her that if her kid doesn't want to eat, don't shove the food down her throat?
She responds "You don't understand you don't have kids"

That right there....the worst 7 words to ever come out of any parents mouth.

I voted no- I simply believe it detrimental to a child's sense of right/wrong for them to avoid a certain behavior only for fearing the consequences incurred. They should so understand why the behavior or action is incorrect, through explanation, that they'll straighten of their own accord- if their only restraint is the fear of punishment, they might simply search for a method to avoid said punishment while continuing with the unwanted behavior.

In addition, I'm of the opinion that violence, even so mild as spanking, can only worsen any relationship.

There are other ways to punish your kids. Using violence will make them resent you for it and somebody shouldn't have to endure physical pain. You shouldn't teach your children that violence is the best way to solve a problem.

Nope, seems fine to me. It'll teach him not to hit his brother because then he gets hit. I actually think that's a great example of when to spank your kids.

but that only instills fear, and it's kinda redundant, i mean first the kid hits someone then the parent hits the kid, it's not very productive

If blinid people have better hearing, than an eye for an eye gives the whole world better hearing.
