I think he was referring to chicken. Since Chick-fil-A is closed we must resort to hunting, cleaning and frying our own chicken.

At least I hope that's what he meant!

Our knowledge doesn't refute the existence of any deity, but simply makes them arbitrary to our lives. Relative to the universe, if it were an average sized room, we are but one tiny square millimetre of dust in the corner. We aren't anything special physically, since there is an irrefutable possibility of life in our boundless universe, our relatively tiny galaxy and even as close as our own solar system. Fun fact: We share more than 70% of our DNA with a banana.

What is special, as the amazing Stephen Hawking stated, is that we have the imagination and power to understand our universe even to the smallest facets of it. Your logical fallacy about how to the explain the origins of the universe is silly. To sit back and state that we will never understand it and that it was the creation of some divine being undermines humanity's progression and everything we have achieved so far.

This is where Steven Hawking and I come to an impasse. I will not argue that the appurtenances of modern life all come courtesy of science, nor would I argue that our ability to fathom the universe is unique and wonderful. Where I butt heads with the man is firstly, over his assertion that God is not necessary, which, while he does not state so, implies that, in being unnecessary, belief in God is, in some way, stupid or hindering(or, that either belief is acceptable, in which case his point is rather moot). Secondly, and most egregiously, I refute his notion that man can, at some point, know all there is to know in the universe. The universe takes on, in being measured, an almost fractal quality; the more we scrutinize, the finer a level of detail we discover to scrutinize it at, and when we scrutinize it again more finely, we find an even finer level. Belief in a higher power, at least, lends some modicum of humility to the understanding of reality.

Striving to be stupid =/= humility.

I'd rather be Steven Hawking, and believe that it is possible to learn everything, than believe that it is impossible to know anything, that we shouldn't even strive to know everything. The idea that there is no limit to what we can learn is an even more exciting one, I think.

The bad thing about the Popeyes' around these parts is the fact that you can't pay with plastic. They have this weird ATM-like contrivance where you swipe your card for a coupon for a fixed-dollar amount (atop the fee, of course) which you then redeem at the cash register for your purchase and change.

Seriously silly, I say.

Dark Spark, have you ever thought that, if you reveal all the answers to the universe's mysteries, the world might end. It seems you know too much.

I never said it's impossible to know anything, nor would I. I rail at that assertion by the religious right(or juggalos lol) as much(I'm sure) as you do. And I certainly agree that the idea that there is no limit to the knowledge in the universe is also amazing and exciting. What galls me is Hawking's seeming attitude that it is possible for man to know everything, which is highly arrogant, IMO, and also necessitates the idea that knowledge of the universe is finite, which I don't agree with(nor is there any science to support such a viewpoint).

Nope, it's nothing beyond giving up.

Humility is knowing when to admit you're wrong and such; belief in a deity is just saying: "I give up."

No. A belief in a deity is not saying "I give up", giving up is saying "I give up". Just because you're religious doesn't mean you can believe in evolution or the Big Bang or anything else.

Oops, Ed worded that hastily.

Corrected: "Believing in a deity creating the universe, humanity and guiding it's advancement is giving up."

Hope that makes more sense.

I suppose I can understand why you would say that. I believe in a deity but I don't believe that he Created the Universe in seven days. I believe that he made the Big Bang.

Ed still reckons that's akin to giving up on finding what caused the big bang.

We may never know in our lifetime, but that doesn't mean we should give up.

A good example is Fusion Power. Once we master it, it will essentially solve our power issues; as it is the ultimate power source within our knowledge.

The origins of the universe and how that came about, is the ultimate knowledge to our existence. Saying "God did it" will never get us anywhere in those regards.

Lol.

If one side has their chocolate, and the other side has their vanilla, why bother with trying to get the vanilla to like chocolate? and Vice Versa?

You can have your vanilla as long as I can have my chocolate. Wouldn't that keep everyone happy?

I believe that God can be found in infinity, because infinity is the one concept that humans can never truly wrap their minds around. An irony that the ratio of the circumference of a circle to the diameter, and the square root of two, the fundamental root of a square, both critical building blocks to the universe, are utterly infinite. An irony that the universe itself is infinite, and therefore any attempts to scale it down to size via metaphors in fact only scale down the smaller object.

Finally, I believe that the Big Bang was begun by the crush of energy created by the ending of the last universe, which simultaneously never existed because time ceased to exist with the end, and I believe that pattern stretches into infinity in both directions, and within is found God.

Now, since this is by far a subject of religion, and we're meant to be discussing the stance of a fast-food company on homosexuality, let us return to the topic at hand.

Just one thing, I don't think the universe is infinite. It still has to follow laws. If it expands at the speed of light, or near to it, and it has been doing it for 14.7 billion years then you have a number for its size.
