ācta: i. 20th First Seed: 3 hours past midnight It smelled of human exertion and dead soil. Darkness crept alongside them. It must have been comforting that at the very least the Redguard - Legate Casimer Demetrius-Khan, he had claimed to be - and had not been lying when he'd told them that the tunnel had an end and the end would have them emerge outside the castle walls. The light and the ladder testified to the former point - and the sheer length of the walk to the latter. It had been perhaps twenty minutes since their conspiratorial meeting had concluded with mission directions, a short enough time that the bulk of it still echo'd in their minds: The popular-history books of the future would begin - one could be certain - with a documentation of the nausea-inducing setting. The stench of death had filled their lungs on entering the Church Undercroft: the almost overwhelming odour of the corpses maintained below for embalming. Casimer had been waiting and his gaze seemed to pass over each of the newcomers with a glance at the strength of their reactions. He had first congratulated them all on completing their recruitment and joining the Legion. There was a disinterest - or at least a lack of warmth typical of a congratulations - in his tone. Then, formalities concluded, he had continued:
You might be wondering why we chose you for this unit. Gods-knows that we avoided natural fighters. But each of you is adept in a role, and together you are as formidable as any unit we put on the field." There was a sense of heartfelt meaning in his tone. But the Redguard did not labour on such and had been quick to continue with the mission details next. Tone mild and business-like now, he listed off the facts like a tax-statement. The main Thalmor forces in the area had stationed themselves on the remains of a village which had been cleared out during the initial advance. Intelligence suggested that force had moved West but their supplies were still maintained in a number of large barns at the top of the hill that the village was situated on. Their mission was simple, eliminate the supplies and this would undermine the general Thalmor position. The manner in which he announced it offered no indication that he thought this was ambitious, or insane. He had continued without pause. There was an Imperial scout waiting for them a mile south of their target location, with further directions and orders to accompany them. It was stressed with unusual strength that this scout was in no position of leadership, and that as far as the legion was concerned he was 'literal [&@%!]' but had a 'good eye'. Directions were offered, and then the passage they now walked was revealed: hidden behind a revolving tomb. --- Gaining - now - on the end that was in sight, the ladder was becoming clearer in their vision; illuminated in the dim light of oil-fued lamp. It was made of rope but rope thick enough that it might have supported their heaviest members. Entering the chamber in which it was held - a chamber large enough to host their entire group, it's length could be admired, or feared. It seemed longer than their ascent to the Church Undercroft might have justified - hinting perhaps at a subtle slope in the path that had just been walked. The final words of the Redguard would have echo'd loudest in their heads as choices were to be made about who ascended first: "The tunnel emerges at a Shrine to the Gods, three miles east of Cheydinhal, and one mile west of the target location. We can't be sure there won't be Thalmor closer, or even there. Be careful." |

They have been informed. If they have experience, find a leader. If they do not or have no Shulbash arrived with his equipment and rucksack. "This is it?" He remarked with mild disbelief at the gathering of recruits. "I am Shulbash. Warrior. Breaker of Men and Elves. Murderer. Thief. Torturer. I have fought the Thalmor many times. Do any of you have experience of taking the lives of the [&@%!]?" He addressed the group. Looks weak. May use that to our advantage. No obvious warriors. May have to take charge and lead them. They are useful or the Legion are fools . "But we will head up and get introductions done when we are away from this city. Refer to me as Skullbash. It will become the name they fear. I shall go first up the ladder." |

Baelfire stood in the gloom of the Undercroft chamber, his hood draped over his head as a shield from the cold night air. Clad in black, the gentle light from the flickering oil lamp did little to illuminate his frame. As Shulbash began to speak, the Imperial glanced over at him for a second, on his approach to their way of exit: the rope ladder. With a quick look upwards, he began to climb. |

Following closely through the darkness, her quirky hair, those glancing eyes, them shuffling feet. She held tightly to a tome against her chest with both arms 'Woe have I gotten myself into now.. She seemed so misplaced, and quite evidently by her attire, somewhat unready for this evening of events. Time and time again she replayed that speech in her head, she was no warrior, no spy, no agent, but a simple book seller. Her nerves further shakes as the large brutish figure gave his voice. As she glanced at the rope, she wavered a bit, she held tighter to her tome |

Standing in the dim chamber with his hand on the hilt of his rapier, Laurius Maximilian could not but snort at Shulbash's comments. "My apologies, sir Orc," he said, his smooth voice marked with wry amusement, "But I'm not calling anyone Skullbash with a straight face this side of the Shivering Isles." He held up his hands self-effacingly, and gave an apologetic smirk. "Now, I don't want to get on anyone's bad side, and I won't question your experience in the fight. But let's all stick with the names we've been given, shall we? Laurius Maximilian is mine." He extended a hand to Shulbash, his attempt at making amends. In actual fact, he was nervous and afraid for his life on this mission tonight, but he was doing his best to conceal it behind the bravado he was well used to displaying. He'd had to tone that down in the last two years, to avoid drawing the eye of the invaders, but it still came naturally to him. Or at the very least, it covered up the writhing pit in his stomach. |

Shulbash "Skullbash would serve as a name for them to fear and an obvious clue to what will happen." Shulbash told the Imperial and looked at him. He shook the Imperial's hand with a very strong grip. Either He was showing his strength or he never knew how much pressure to apply to the recipent's hand. "That is wise." He saw that the other Imperial had ignored him and mentally labelled him a fool. It was his plan to go first to see if the exit was clear and take care of any Thalmor that were nearby. "Go ahead. Get caught by any [&@%!] that are potentially waiting above." He told the man that was climbing the ladder. Get the feeling that this.....gathering may not be easy to lead. Skullbash Elfbreaker may sound like a stupid name but it is one the elves shall fear. Best release his hand before I accidentally break it. Always hate shaking hands unless I am trying to injure them. Why? Why is this such a gesture? He released Lauris's hand. |

You'd think they could spring for some armor. Half of us are in our damn clothes. "Says the Orc wearing more metal than a war horse. Not exactly the most covert apparel." said Philip in a low tone once Skullbash had finished. Bash, brash, crash, rash. Eh, I could work with it. He crossed his arms and watched the Imperial climb. If there was anyone up there they were soon going to find out. |

Arya Direnni All this tension and passive aggressiveness was really eating away at her courage, well, what little she really had. Uncontrollably, the elf began to shake, so much so her bones could even rattle. And yet, she kept her smile, albeit forced. She tried to speak through her mounting panic "Ummm.. I..I..I.. No.. This is fine. Normal even.. Exquisite in the mundane.. What could possibly go wrong?" She sniffled a bit, and once more forced that smile "This fine. It's fine.." She felt so small amongst these fighters |

Sorondil Sorondil sighed at the pointless bickering, and refrained from commenting. They hadn't even exited the tunnel to begin their first mission. He glanced up at the rope ladder as some of the group began to climb. "Hold up," he ordered. "We don't know if we're walking into an ambush. I can summon a familiar to scout it out, if we want." |

Vila stood a little bit farther off the main rabble, arms crossed in front of her chest, her stern gaze systematically scanning her surroundings for information, a practice which conjured an illusion of sluggishness and disinterest on the exterior. The fact that they were to perform their virgin mission with little more than vague information and the clothes on their back wasn't unsurprising, but disconcerting nontheless. There was no doubt in her mind that the mission's objective was not to burn the Thalmor supplies; that would only be a convenient bonus. No, it was their viability, their ability of this rag-tag team of extraordinary individuals to perform extraordinary feats with extraordinary results. They were an experiment. Her eyebrow cocked up at Shulbash's boisterous introduction. Half of her fellow recruits seemed to share her sentiment on the Orc. She would wait before actually commenting on it, though. If she were to pass this test, and pass it alive, she would have to manipulate the flow and the accuracy of information. Not so different from selling books. Not at all. Her gaze grazed Arya, her former mentor. It was a little bit ironic that they'd continue to be colleagues in this much more haphhazard line of work. The Altmer seemed nervous, which was normal. Vila was quite nervous herself, she was just better at hiding it. Just as when the Bosmer scout had pretended to apprehend her, her expression was like a dark-stained porcelain mask. Countenance was everything, especially while your new superior is inspecting you while you're trying not to retch from the smell of the decomposing dead. "I'm Vila. Vila Valaai. Either suits me," her voice was calm, as if this were nothing but an afternoon meeting of people faintly acquianted with another. "I sell books, with Arya here." As she spoke, she glanced over at the ladder. She wasn't making any moves towards it yet. She wanted to know more about the people she was working with before delivering herself into the vague situation above ground. |

Without halting from his climb, nor looking away from his direction of travel, Baelfire answered whomever was telling him to 'hold up'. "It's fine. I'll check things out." His voice was deep, but silken smooth. |

Shulbash "Be quick and return to let us know." Shulbash told the Imperial and mentally facepalmed at what had been gathered. Booksellers are a poor choice. She best have other skills or her life may be taken by the curs that took this province. This is going to be.......interesting. They best not object to any torture or kills. |

Arya Direnni The bookseller tried to work up some strength, if not due to display before her pupil. She took a sharp breath, before a slow exhale to calm her jumpy nerves "A..Arya Direnni, if we are to be formal.." Formality was probably lost when hiding behind the back of her younger, or crowded in decrepit tunnel. "Y..your S..Sorondil if I'm to be correct." She raised a weary finger while saying so "An'.. your Marnus's and Celestia's child, are you not?" She slowly undid herself from the security of her shelter, or more appropriately, Vila's back. Looking up at the ladder, she said in distant pause "I.. I.. highly doubt there would be an ambush immediately upon our ascent.. Had this been a trap.. Would we not already be snared? W..we should p..probably try and preserve any magicka.. Till we're under the moons' light.. I..If their waiting for us.. T..they know where we'll go." |

"Philip Morello, professional bard. You might have heard me playing at one of the city's taverns. Before the occupation that is." said Philip, introducing himself. He turned his head to look at Arya. It was clear the woman was anxious and why wouldn't she be? He thought it best to try and ease those nerves. "A mage then? One of my best friends is a mage. Blanche. And her tricks came in useful more than my sword ever did. You'll be fine. And like you said, they don't know we're here." said Philip with a reassuring grin. |

Laurius looked up at Baelfire with an eyebrow raised, thinking that his fellow Imperial was being unnecessarily rash. Still, he waited for the man to reach the top and report what he saw. "Indeed I am," he replied to Arya's recognition of him, although the mention of his father had sent a pang through his heart. He seconded Philip's encouragement: "Hear, hear. You've no more to worry about than the rest of us, and considering that I'd only call myself perhaps two-thirds of a mage, I can say you're surely in a better spot than at least one of us." |

Sorondil The old Altmer shrugged when the Imperial insisted on climbing. There were advantages to doing it either way: a person might be less visually noticeable than a familiar. He nodded when the bookseller recognized him: he recognized her as well, though he did not know her particularly well. "Sorondil, alchemist," he said, for the benefit of the others. "And conjuration specialist." At her comment about the ambush, he explained his reasoning, crossing his arms. "He said that there is a shrine to the gods above this. Would that not be an ideal place for them to watch for any worshipers that flout their decrees?" |

Baelfire soon reached the top of the ladder and a trapdoor, constructed of grubby, aged iron, that, when ready, he could push open. There were no voices from above to be heard. |

"Sshh." Baelfire asked for the others to be quiet, before he slowly pushed open the trapdoor - just enough to peer outside. |

Wherever Baelfire was peering out to, it was dark. The immediate sense was that of his own confinement: direct in front he could see a solid-stone table and his position was then further enclosed by the walls around him; which, from his angle, gave the impression of squeezing together somewhere close behind. He seemed to be in some sort of cave, but the strength of wind's whistle that bustled further on hinted at it being an abri, rather. The single light was that of the flickering candles, which, with a glance up, he could see poised at the edge of the stone table. There was some sort of religious relic separating them at the centre, a golden horn. No-one tried to kill him, which was a good start. |

With no immediate threat visibly present upon opening the trapdoor, Baelfire pushed it open further. He kept his eyes keen and his ears sharp, as he slowly climbed above ground. |

Baelfire heard nothing to set him off as he climbed out of the trapdoor. It seemed to have been well oiled despite it's worn look as it did not emit even the mildest creak. The Imperial emerged into a cave that was just as small as might have been immediately recognised. The stone table was about four feet and one foot across. On it rested candles, placed around the golden horn, and various tributes (jewels, gold, and so on) that one would presume had been offered to the gods at one stage or another. Other than that the cave fit nothing else. In fact - once one accounted for the space the stone table took up: it was smaller than the chamber that Baelfire had climbed up from. It's depth ended almost immediately after the trapdoor. Standing, he could see outside the cave mouth and into the surrounding woods. The night was pitch black - the moon hidden behind clouds. |

Shulbash Shulbash made his way towards the rope ladder and placed a hand on the scared woman's shoulder. "Do not be quick to venture ahead." He advised her and hated seeing innocents being slaughtered like sheep. He had seen the handiwork of the Thalmor of those deemed to be criminals and it was not something he would ever forget. The images of burnt farmers were the first thing he saw when he closed his eyes. The heads of citizens stuck on pikes for worshipping Talos was something he pay them back in blood for. If everything was clear ahead, he would attempt to be the second one up the ladder. |

The hand on her shoulder took her by sudden surprise, and made her jump a bit. It didn't help one bit that she was already leaned back and loss on focus. In a quick yipe, the altmer mate found her feet not the floor, but to the air. She fell back in surprise, landing upon her rump "Ow..ow.. ow... I.. I was just looking. Inspecting to see whether he made his ascent unhindered.. Uh... How I wished the same down here" |

Shulbash Shulbash was caught off guard by the woman's reaction and looked down at her after she fell over. He extended his left arm with the intention of helping her up. "I did not intend to scare you, little one." He told her. "It is best to use caution and haste can lead to death. I shall look out for you. The N... Malacath knows I have seen too much death." Almost let that slip. Need to protect the weaker members. If caught and tortured, enrage the torturer and take the brunt of it. I will perish or take it. Makes no difference. Her? She would crack instantly. Same with the other book woman and most of these. Mission plans should be formed. Use this Imperial Scout as bait for the Thalmor. Kill Thalmor and burn supplies. A wandering sellsword is associated with us. Need to suggest it later. Use myself as a big dumb slave with the Altmer as my master. THe others burn supplies whilst we distract what likely low ranking guards they have left. He didn't smile at her out of the belief his scarred face would come off as rather creepy. He wasn't a pretty orc but neither was the battlefield.
