Okay, so I'm starting a new story-based (So, no rolling dice) RP (Fantasy, of course), and I've have run into a problem, which has caused another problem.

My main idea for this RP is to allow you to play as any race/creature and profession. And I mean anything. I want to see/read a Beholder banker chatting with a Daedroth merchant Now, I have a fair bit set out (In my mind, at least, but I've got the important stuff written down) But well....

What the hell is the setting going to be?!

Because of the whole 'Play anything' part, I have no clue in what universe this would take place in, and I don't think I'm skilled enough/have the patience to create one.

Now, the second problem this causes is I don't know what the main story will be, but that's easy to fix, just need to solve the first problem...

So, Ideas? Tips? Hints? Anything? I'm even considering "hiring" a co-RP maker

Elder scroll universe, or real world? Which one would you prefer?

Nothin' better than an elf driving down the streets of London with the ability to shoot fire from his fingers. Harry Potter, perhaps?

Except for maybe a troll shooting fire from his fingers.

The problem is, The Elder Scrolls universe wouldn't work because I've yet to see one of these while exploring the forts of Cyrodiil.

And real world wouldn't because.... I've yet to see one of these while exploring the streets of Australia! (Wouldn't look out of place, though)

And pretty much any other universe wouldn't work for the same reasons...

Though now that people are starting to mention modern.....

I've yet to see one of these in New York, but they say that in 50 years, they will have nearly revived the species through genetic crossing between the genes found in the hairs of a fossil and the genes of an Asian elephant. Interesting, eh?

Anyway, according to this, magic has a heavy influence on our world. Why not try something like that?

You obviously need a setting. That's the whole point of the RP. Putting a bunch of guys randomly in and telling them to create a plot will likely fail. You at least need a lead.

So, kinda like D&D? But not D&D?

Oh well, I'll be up for whatever it is, probably.

The idea I have in my head is a Story-based RP were anyone can play as any creature/race (With some limitations....). Once enough people join, I'll probably start the main 'Go here to do awesome stuff' story (No point in writing a massive story if no one joins )

Now, I personally would prefer a fantasy setting (Though the idea of a Umber Hulk Cowboy riding a motorcycle is pretty awesome [dibs]), but as I've said, I don't think there are any pre-existing settings where this wouldn't be odd, and I doubt I could make one.

Though as I've said, I'm willing to work with someone, so if there's anyone who's great at making complete settings from scratch...

Ever heard of the Planes? They're in d&d. I think with a bit of tweaking they could easily be the setting for this, since practically nothing is odd there.

How much knowlodge do you have on DnD, Vivec? Mine is limited to what I can find on Wikipedia and Icewind Dale .

Mostly what I know is about Faerun. I do know a bit about the Planes though. I know all about the system and classes, though.

Just a quick question: Which plane would this RP make the most sense in? I'm guessing a Material Plane, but I'm really not sure...

Maybe an Outer or Inner plane. A Material Plane is like Faerun or something - pretty constricted to only D&D chars and stuff. It would make more sense in the plane of Chaos, Lloth's realm or something, where pretty much anything could be seen as common place.

Consider maybe the Abyss. There's also the Far Realm, which could basically be created from scratch, it's like the Akavir of D&D. The Shadowfell is yet another possibility - a kind of Underworld, filled with shadowy people. And another I would recommend is Phlogiston, where there's only gas and fumes, and only accessible by a spaceship-thingy.
