Rashmi nodded to Herbert, believing in his line of reasoning, here--though she still tried to relieve Councillor Manhaus. She raised up a barrier of her own, around the house.

"The goddanged coast is clear right now!" Kari exclaimed. "Get them to that manhole in then they can get back to [&@%!]!"

Caidan Manhaus collapsed on a nearby couch. "There are only eight people here, so it shouldn't be too hard to get them out" he said. "What manhole are you talking about?"

"Hole in the ground, leads to a sewer," Kari replied. "That's the general idea of a manhole."

"I'll try and find it, then," The Councilor muttered, "so long as you find Constance."

"Maybe some of us should escort you there." said Herbert.

Kari had turned around and was looking out the door.

"Do we really need to? It's seriously right over there!"

"There should be a few more shades waiting for you on the other side of the sewer," Sakhr added, speaking of Aki and Ysmay.

"A priest and a diplomat." Rashmi admitted, sweat accumulating on her brow from effort of holding the shield. "Hardly...protection, but they should be able to lead you to safety."

"I will meet you on the other side, then. May Karic bless you." Caidan began walking towards the door. "You will need that blessing. Taye believes the best and most loyal soldiers are those raised from nothing. He will put you through difficult and dangerous tasks."

__

The Shade Unit saw an empty street leading down. At the far end was a schoolhouse, which barricaded all of the windows and doors.

__

Aki heard a noise coming from the sewer. They couldn't be returning so soon, could they? She heard voices... human, definitely. They were coming closer.

Aki walked over to the sewer and stuck her head down to get a decent look. "Identify yourself" she shouted into he sewers, hoping her voice would echoe enough for the humans in the sewers to hear her. She prepared her hands on the side of the manhole cover just in case it was danger.

"School," Kari mumbled with slight disgust. "Prison's what they should call it."

"I agree," Sakhr said, looking curiously at the schoolhouse. "Learning is best done out in the world, not in a little building."

Herbert began walking towards the school. "I like learning." said Herbert. "Certainly prefer Erubury to this."

"First a sewer, now a school," said Randall, shaking his head but following after Herbert nonetheless.

To Aki's complete shock, she saw the Councilor of Camoran, Caidan Manhaus, staring up at her. "Hello, young woman!" He called out. "I believe I'm more than a bit lost - have been for a few days, in fact. Could you help me up this ladder?"

___

The rest of the Shades approached the schoolhouse. They could see a child's eyes spying on them from an opening in the barred window. "Go away!" An old woman's voice shouted. "You'll attract those demons! There are children in here! Do not risk their lives!"

"Are there others with you?" Sakhr called out, slowly approaching the building. "We're looking for...an important individual."

Aki squinted her eyes to see through the dark sewers. "Not Novar... Is... Is that you Councillor?" she shouted. She still didn't dare to enter the disgusting sewers, but she still wanted to help the people down the sewers. "Come up here! It's safe!"

Ysmay peered down at the man from behind Aki. She gave the other woman a questioning glance. "What is he doing down there?" She asked apprehensively.

"Ain't nobody you could help in here!" The old woman yelled out. "You're only going to attract the wolfmen! Best you be leaving us alone and letting us wait here 'til the army retakes the city." A series of hushed whispers occurred on the other side of the door. "We want to know who you are, first." She said.

__

"Taye's men let me know of this shortcut out of here," the Councilor said. "It was so close to where we were hiding, yet we never would have found it without them. Imagine that."
